Program of Vietnamese Studies, Major in Vietnamese Linguistics and Vietnamese Sociocultural Studies
1. Introduction:
Vietnamese Studies is a science that studies the people and country of Vietnam with a multidisciplinary approach. The Bachelor Program of Vietnamese Studies, Major in Vietnamese Language, Culture and Society at Ton Duc Thang University is a program for foreigners, in order to meet the demands of foreign human resources who can speak Vietnamese language fluently and have thorough knowledge of the people and the country of Vietnam.
The program has the following characteristics:
- It provides a comprehensive knowledge of Vietnamese language, the people and the country of Vietnam.
- It consists of many new, modern subjects that are suitable to the development of the society and can meet the demand of international integration.
- It also includes subjects that train students with communication skills, working skills (teamwork skills, event organizing skills, etc.), and extracurricular activities, in order to help students to have solid knowledge, be confident and dynamic in the multicultural environment and integration trend.
- The program is designed with the emphasis on practice, necessary soft skills as well as the issue of self-study of students throughout the life which is expressed through the ‘learner-centered’ pedagogical viewpoint.
2. Candidates for admission, admission requirements:
Candidates for the Bachelor Program of Vietnamese Studies, Major in Vietnamese Language, Culture and Society include the following groups:
- Foreigners who wish to study in the Bachelor Program of Vietnamese Studies.
- Overseas Vietnamese who wish to learn thoroughly about the language and culture of the nation.
Admission requirements:
- Those who wish to pursue a bachelor degree in Vietnamese Studies, Major in Vietnamese Language, Culture and Society must have a high school diploma (12 years) or equivalent qualification and pass the Vietnamese Proficiency Examination held by Ton Duc Thang University ( elementary level).
- Students of Faculties of Vietnamese Studies of foreign universities that have partnership agreements with Ton Duc Thang University may be accepted for continuing studies the Program of Vietnamese Studies at Ton Duc Thang University.
3. Learning outcomes:
Graduates of the program can acquire the knowledge and skills as follow:
- Knowledge: students understand the social-science knowledge and basic, systematic, modern, and practical knowledge of the country and people of Vietnam; and can apply them into specific issues in their professions.
- Professional skills:
- Analyze and evaluate the sociocultural characteristics of Vietnam;
- Use Vietnamese language fluently in various communication situations (formal, informal…), in translating, interpreting, researching and teaching Vietnamese;
- Consult, carry out and manage projects relating to human resources for foreign enterprises investing in Vietnam;
- Continue to study the appropriate graduate programs, especially the Master Programs of Vietnamese Studies to do further studies and teach in Vietnamese studies.
- General skills:
- Have a solid educational background to understand the professional responsibilities, self-responsibility, and the responsibility to the community and the society;
- Be able to communicate effectively;
- Have the ability to work cooperatively, in team, and work in an organization, especially with a Vietnamese team / organization.
- Computer qualification: the international MOS certificate (MOS 750).
- Foreign language qualifications: English proficiency is equivalent to an IELTS score of 5.0 or a score of 500 according to TOEIC standard.
4. Graduation requirements:
Students who fulfill the following requirements will be considered by the President of Ton Duc Thang University for awarding the degree of Bachelor of Vietnamese Studies, Major in Vietnamese Language, Culture and Society:
- Complete the coursework and accumulate required credits as specified in the curriculum.
- Fully meet the academic outcome criteria of the course.
- Fully meet all the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.
5. Career prospects:
Graduates of the Bachelor Program of Vietnamese Studies, Major in Vietnamese Language, Culture and Society can work in diplomatic offices, commercial offices, representative offices, governmental and non-governmental organizations in Vietnam and abroad. Besides, they can also work in translating, interpreting, researching and teaching Vietnamese.
